PM Urges Social Distancing, Lockdown Declared in 75 Indian Districts

On Sunday, the Cabinet Secretary and the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level meeting regarding COVID-19 with the Chief Secretaries of all the Indian states. The State Chief Secretaries said that Janta Curfew received an overwhelming and spontaneous response.

Furthermore, to control the Novel Coronavirus spread, they agreed on the urgent need to extend the restrictions on the non-essential passenger transport, including inter-state transport, buses until 31 March 2020.

As per the detailed discussions, the state governments have been advised to issue appropriate orders. Also, they are asked to permit only essential services in the 75 districts, where confirmed cases or casualties due to COVID 19 are reported. The state governments may expand the list depending on their assessment of the situation. It was noted that several State Governments have already issued orders on the same.

The major decisions taken are as follows:

  • All train services (except goods trains) are suspended until 31 March 2020, including suburban rail services.
  • All metro rail services are suspended until 31 March 2020. The state governments would issue orders and allow only essential services to be under operation in nearly 75 districts with confirmed cases of COVID-19.
  • Inter-State passenger transport is also to be suspended until 31st March 2020.

PM Modi tweeted on his official handle with the video link of the same-

“Incase you missed it, here is the video link of the press conference by officials yesterday in which important decisions were announced regarding India’s battle against COVID-19. #IndiaFightsCorona”

In a tweet thread, after the people across the nation expressed gratitude to all those fighting the battle against COVID-19 at 5 PM yesterday, PM thanked them for the same. He tweeted-

#JantaCurfew”

Additionally, the PM added that this clarion of gratitude also marked the beginning of India’s victory in a long battle against COVID-19. And he asked the people to follow social distancing with the same resolve and restraint. He wrote in the tweet-

#JantaCurfew”

He tweeted his mother Heeraben and other mothers’ gesture to show appreciation towards those fighting the virus from the forefront-

Earlier, in a series of tweets, PM Modi wrote that it is the start of a long battle against COVID-19 menace. He warned people against complacency and urged people not to regard it as a success and begin to celebrate. He tweeted-

Also, the PPM said that the people should follow the instructions that the central and the state governments issue from time-to-time. He told the people to stay home at places where the lockdown is announced, and in other areas also, they should not leave the house unless essential.

He added-

#JantaCurfew”

Further, he said this to those who are not taking the lockdown seriously-
