PM Modi Holds Video Conference with All Chief Ministers to Fight COVID-19

After announcing Janata Curfew on 22 March while addressing the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a video-conference with CMs. Yesterday, PM Modi held this video interaction with the Chief Ministers of all states to discuss measures to fight COVID-19.

During the online meeting on Friday, the PM said how Novel Coronavirus is a common threat for all states. He emphasized the need for the Center and all states to work together. He said that citizen participation is essential to combat the pandemic, and panic must be avoided.

Further, PM Modi said that constant vigilance is very important considering the spread of the virus globally in several countries. He added that the coming 3-4 weeks are critical in efforts to control its spread. The most important measure to contain it is ‘social distancing.’ He requested all the CMs to ensure that effective implementation takes place in this regard.

Moreover, Preeti Sudan, the Health Secretary at the Center, spoke about the steps taken so far to control the virus spread. She also mentioned how the PM personally monitored and oversaw the ongoing efforts. Further, she shed light on the ongoing cooperation with states, travel restrictions, foreign passengers’ monitoring, community surveillance to track spread, logistics of testing facilities, and Indian citizens’ evacuation from abroad.

Also, Dr. Balram Bhargava, DG of ICMR, said that India is in phase-2 of COVID-19 transmission. He stressed that currently, India is in the window to take action towards minimizing the transmission risk of phase-3. He also mentioned how important is the prudent use of health facilities and need to increase quarantine facilities & isolation wards.

The CMs thanked the PM for the Center’s support to the states in fighting COVID-19 & even appreciated his message’s impact. They briefed the PM and others regarding the preparations done until now. They also asked for increased testing facilities, further support to vulnerable sections, offer financial disbursement for 2020-21 to the states, and more private labs and hospitals. In all, the CMs pledged their support & reaffirmed that they would work unitedly with the Center to fight the pandemic.

Furthermore, the PM appreciated the steps state governments have taken and thanked them for suggestions and sharing their experiences. He discussed the urgent need for capacity building of healthcare workers and improving healthcare infrastructure. PM Modi suggested the CMs hold a video-conference with respective trade bodies to prevent black marketing & illegal price rise. He requested them to use the soft power of persuasion and legal provisions, as and when needed.

Also, PM Modi said that the COVID-19 Economic Task Force would lay a strategy to devise a suited approach to best tackle the economic crisis. He asked the CMs to make sure that all necessary steps are taken. And all advisories should be adhered to ensuring the citizens’ safety throughout the nation.

He tweeted on his official handle-

“Today, via video conferencing, had an extensive interaction with Chief Ministers of various states to discuss ongoing efforts towards tackling COVID-19 menace. Discussed ways to curtail the spread and ensure our citizens are healthy. #IndiaFightsCorona”

He added in another tweet from the thread-

“Officials from the Centre briefed the Chief Ministers on the series of steps being taken to fight COVID-19. CMs shared aspects relating the preparedness of their respective states to combat Coronavirus. #IndiaFightsCorona”

Earlier, he held a video-conference with SAARC leaders to discuss best practices & announced $10 million towards the COVID-19 Emergency Fund. The total cases of COVID-19 cases, which are reported positive, are more than 270 in India.
