Lok Sabha Passes the Quota Bill, PM Calls it a “Landmark Moment”

After the announcement of PM Modi on 10% quota for economically weaker in General Category, Lok Sabha yesterday passed the bill.

As soon as the bill passed in Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the passing of the quota bill in Lok Sabha was a “landmark moment” in the nation’s history. Moreover, he said, this assured justice for all sections of society.

Further, PM Modi was also present in Lok Sabha at the time of voting on the bill yet didn’t participate in the discussion, and said that Modi government remains committed to its goal of “development for all.”

The bill, assuring a 10 percent quota in education as well as jobs for the general category candidates who are economically backward, was passed by the Lok Sabha Yesterday with a huge majority. As 323 members voted for it, had the majority of not less than two-thirds of the members present, only three were against – registering that the bill already got support from a majority of the opposition parties.

Moreover, the AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam; an Indian political party) walked out. AIADMK was debating that there were enough schemes for the poor, so the fresh reservation was not required. Not only AIADMK, but many of the opposition parties alleged that this movement of government was only politically motivated as proposed before the national elections.

After the Lok Sabha passed the bill, PM Modi sent out a series of tweets.

“I thank MPs from all the parties who supported The Constitution (One Hundred And Twenty-Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Lok Sabha. I also appreciate those MP colleagues who enriched today’s debate with their views.”

Further, he wrote,

“We are resolutely committed to the principle of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.’ It is our endeavour to ensure that every poor person, irrespective of caste or creed gets to lead a life of dignity, and gets access to all possible opportunities.”

Moroever he wrote,

“The passage of The Constitution (One Hundred And Twenty-Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Lok Sabha is a landmark moment in our nation’s history. It sets into motion the process to achieve an effective measure that ensures justice for all sections of society.”

As BJP had faced the anger of upper castes in the recent round of assembly elections in the three heartland states, it is seen as a huge comeback move for them.

Further, the bill will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha today; it has a fair chance of passing there also.
