Christchurch Terror Attack: PM Condemns Shootings, Writes to NZ PM

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and expressed “deep shock and sadness” over the heinous terrorist attack in New Zealand while stressing India’s strong condemnation of terrorism and of all those who support such acts of violence.

On 15th March, two mosques full of worshippers attending Friday prayers faced Mass shootings and killed at least 49 people in Christchurch City in the South Island, New Zealand. Many explosive devices were defused there, hence it appeared to be a carefully planned racist attack.

In a letter to Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern, Modi expressed sadness over the death of scores of people and also underscored India’s solidarity with the people of her country in this difficult time.

According to the official release from the External Affairs Ministry,

“PM @narendramodi strongly condemns the heinous terrorist attack at the places of worship in #Christchurch today

The letter says,

“Prime Minister has expressed his deep shock and sadness at the loss of scores of innocent lives in the heinous terrorist attack at the places of worship in Christchurch.

The Prime Minister stressed India’s strong condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and of all those who support such acts of violence. He stressed that hatred and violence have no place in diverse and democratic societies.”

PM Modi has also expressed his deepest condolences to the families suffered in this cruel attack. He also offered heartfelt prayers for the fast recovery of the injured and underscored India’s solidarity with the friendly people of New Zealand at this tough time.

Also, it is found that one Indian man has been critically injured in the shootings of New Zealand mosque. And the name of the victim is Ahmed Jehangir.

Asaduddin Owaisi, President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) has asked the government, President of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) KT Rama Rao, Telangana Chief Minister’s Office, and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to help Ahmed Jehangir’s brother Iqbal Jehangir.

Iqbal Jehangir is a resident of Hyderabad, according to the information tweeted by Asaduddin Owaisi.

Owaisi tweeted that Iqbal Jehangir wants to visit New Zealand for his brother’s family living in New Zealand.

Owaisi wrote on Twitter,

“A video from #ChristChurch shows one Ahmed Jehangir who was shot. His brother Iqbal Jehangir is a resident of Hyderabad & would like to go to NZ for Ahmed’s family.

I request @KTRTRS @TelanganaCMO @MEAIndia @SushmaSwaraj to make necessary arrangements for the Khursheed family”

Minister of State for External Affairs Vijay Kumar Singh tweeted,

“India stands with #NewZealand in this hour of grief & sorrow and offers it’s condolences to the bereaved families.

Apart from PM Modi, several world leaders have expressed their disgust at the deadly killings.

US President Trump tweeted,

“My warmest sympathy and best wishes goes out to the people of New Zealand after the horrible massacre in the Mosques. 49 innocent people have so senselessly died, with so many more seriously injured. The U.S. stands by New Zealand for anything we can do. God bless all!”

UK Prime Minister Theresa May wrote,

“On behalf of the UK, my deepest condolences to the people of New Zealand after the horrifying terrorist attack in Christchurch. My thoughts are with all of those affected by this sickening act of violence.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she mourned with New Zealanders for their fellow citizens who were attacked and murdered out of racist hatred while peacefully praying in their mosques.

French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted,

“All our thoughts for the victims of the heinous crimes against the mosques of Christchurch in New Zealand and for their loved ones. France stands up against all forms of extremism and acts with its partners against terrorism in the world.”
