Rajya Sabha yesterday passed the bill to provide 10 percent reservation for economically backward general castes in jobs as well as in educational institutes. “Delighted” over the passage of the Constitution (124th amendment) Bill, Modi said he was glad to see such extensive support for it.

It was necessary that the Constitutional Amendment Bill must get the approval of at least 50 percent of the Assemblies as well as the President of the country before becoming a law.

When the law was proposed by the Modi Government, many opposition parties said that it is nothing but a hypocritical and frivolous exercise which is prepared in a hustle as elections are near. Even though the opposition parties supported the bill, they stated that it was displayed without any “qualifiable” records and is bound to be investigated by the Supreme Court.

Thawar Chand Gehlot (Social Justice Minister) said,

“This decision has not been taken in haste. It is brought with good intention keeping in view the welfare of the poor in General category.”

A 10-hour-long debate took place in Rajya Sabha before becoming the bill. Despite opposition from few parties, most of the members in the Upper House of the Parliament agreed to go ahead with the bill.

Shortly after the passage of the bill, Prime Minister took to Twitter to praise the Parliament for passing the historic amendment.

PM Modi wrote,

“Delighted the Rajya Sabha has passed The Constitution (One Hundred And Twenty-Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2019. Glad to see such widespread support for the Bill. The House also witnessed a vibrant debate, where several members expressed their insightful opinions.”

“Passage of The Constitution (One Hundred And Twenty-Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2019 in both Houses of Parliament is a victory for social justice. It ensures a wider canvas for our Yuva Shakti to showcase their prowess and contribute towards India’s transformation.”

“By passing The Constitution (One Hundred And Twenty-Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2019, we pay tributes to the makers of our Constitution and the great freedom fighters, who envisioned an India that is strong and inclusive.”

As per the last step of the legislative process, the quota bill will now go to the President for approval. And as soon as it gets approval, it will become a law. And, then it will be ready to give 10 percent reservation to economically backward sections in the forward castes in central and state government jobs as well as education.
