PM Narendra Modi Speaks at COP 14 to UNCCD in Greater Noida

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at the Conference of Parties 14 (COP14) to United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Greater Noida. During his speech, he called upon the leadership of UNCCD to devise a global water action agenda that is key to the Land Degradation Neutrality strategy.

This conference covered global issues related to the environment, especially land management. At the conference, PM Modi went on to announce that the Central govt is committed to ending the single-use plastic in the years to come. Also, he said that the time has come for even the world to say good-bye to single-use plastic.

Moreover, PM Modi said that India would raise its goal, from 21 million hectares to 26 million hectares between 2019 and 2030, for the total area that is to be restored from the land degradation status. Also, he said that land restoration and micro-irrigation are some of the innovative steps adopted by the current government.

PM Modi tweeted-

“Indian culture has always given topmost respect to land.

Today, when desertification is on the rise, the need of the hour is compelling action on the land front.”

In another tweet, he mentioned why restoring land health is essential for sustainable development –

“Here is why restoring land health is vital for sustainable development.”

PM talked about the frameworks and ground-level teamwork to bring societal change. He wrote in a tweet-

“In addition to frameworks, it is team work on the ground that will bring societal change.”

In his address, Prime Minister said that India uses remote sensing and space technology for various applications like land restoration. Further, he said that India would willingly help other friendly nations for developing land restoration strategies via cost-effective satellite and space technology.

PM Modi said that India is conserving more water by using modern technology. He said that India aims of ‘per drop more crop.’ It means less water consumption for agriculture but more production of crops than that in past years. Jal Shakti Ministry is formed to address the problems related to water. Also, the govt focuses on zero budget natural farming.
