PM Narendra Modi Interacts with Zambian President Edgar C Lungu

New Delhi: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind met Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. Six agreements were signed between both the countries and bilateral talks were held. President Chagwa was received at the Rashtrapati Bhavan by both the dignitaries.

PM Modi and President Lungu held wide-ranging talks to strengthen bilateral ties. Also, the two leaders stressed on improving bilateral trade and investment and expand development cooperation.

In a joint press statement with President Lungu, PM Modi as a reliable partner in development cooperation said that India has continually shared its developmental experiences with Zambia. PM Modi mentioned the progress made in projects related to health, power generation, and easing traffic in Lusaka, the Zambian capital with Indian cooperation.

PM Modi said that both the countries would be extending their participation in the tourism, agriculture, healthcare, food processing, and mining fields.

After the bilateral talks, the six Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) or agreements were signed between India and Zambia were in key sectors like geology and mineral resources, art and culture, and defense.

An MoU was signed between Foreign Service Institute of India and Zambian Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies. Further, two agreements were inked on ‘E-VBAB Network Project’ (e-education) and between Election Commission of India and Electoral Commission of Zambia.

Prime Minister Modi said that the government of India would cooperate in establishing an Incubation Centre in Zambia. He stated-

“India will also provide 100 solar irrigation pumps to boost agriculture and send 1,000 tonnes of rice as well as 100 tonnes of milk powder to Zambia. Zambia is a country rich in mineral wealth and among other minerals, India takes large quantities of copper from the African country.”

PM Modi said the agreement on mineral resources would help in enhancing cooperation in the field of mining, and a framework would be laid for the exploration and extraction of mineral resources.

PM Modi emphasized that a crucial MOU has been signed on defense cooperation and said that it would increase exchanges in the defense field. He told that Indian military and air-force training teams would be deployed in Zambia to help enhance the capabilities of the armed forces of that country. Further, he said that India would be deploying five fire tenders in Zambia Air force bases.

PM Modi posted three successive tweets on his official Twitter handle. In the first tweet, he shared the video of address to the press along with President Lungu.

“Furthering friendship with Zambia. Addressing the press with President @EdgarCLungu”

In another tweet, PM Modi wrote-

“Today’s talks with President @EdgarCLungu were fruitful. Subjects covered include trade, commerce, investment, infrastructure and cultural ties. India is happy to partner Zambia in their developmental aspirations be it in power generation or improving urban infrastructure.”

In the final tweet, he said-

“During the visit of President @EdgarCLungu, important MoUs have been signed in sectors like geology, mineral resources, defence, art and culture. These agreements will pave the way for strong bilateral relations with Zambia for the benefit of our citizens.”

Zambian President Lungu arrived in New Delhi, Indian capital on a three-day tour on Tuesday.
