PM Modi Releases Rs 150 Coins to Commemorate 150th Gandhi Jayanti

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended various events to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. Earlier, in the day, he paid floral tributes at Gandhiji’s memorial Rajghat and shared details about his full-day program in Ahmedabad.

On this occasion, PM Modi released commemorative Rs 150 coins to mark Gandhiji’s 150th birth anniversary in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on reaching Sabarmati Riverfront for the ‘Swachh Bharat Diwas‘ program.

Apart from PM Modi, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was there at the event. In January this year, PM Modi released a commemorative Rs 350 coin on the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh’s 352nd birth anniversary, and also released Rs 100 coin on Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s 94th birth anniversary in December 2018.

Also, he attended a special Swachha Bharat Diwas Programme on the Sabarmati river banks. There, he recognized the remarkable work of many Swachhagrahis who work round the clock to realize Gandhi Ji’s dream. Also, he praised the people who contribute towards plastic waste cleaning Shramdan.

Then, he visited Sabarmati Ashram and left this message on the visitor’s book at Sabarmati Ashram-

“I’m satisfied that on the occasion of #GandhiAt150, we’re witnessing the fulfillment of his dream of ‘Swachh Bharat’. I feel lucky that on this occasion when India has successfully stopped open defecation.”

Also, he paid tributes to the Father of the Nation at the ashram.

PM Narendra Modi said that rural India declared itself open defecation free (ODF). He announced it in the presence of more than 20,000 village heads at an event to mark Bapu’s 150th birth anniversary at Sabarmati Riverfront.

Further, he said that 99% of Indian villages are open defecation free. The villages built more than 11 crore toilets within a short period.

PM Modi recognized the contribution of ground-level volunteers who made Swachhta and toilets a common man’s topic. He said-

“This mission helped make the toilet, which was earlier a difficult topic, a common topic of discussion. From girls who demanded toilet before marriage to Bollywood, everyone contributed to the mission to make India open-defecation-free.”

The PM said that the achievement of building toilets for a huge population of India within five years left the world amazed. He said-

“The whole world is appreciating and awarding us (for) providing toilets to over 60 crore people in 60 months by building over 11 crore toilets. The world is amazed by this.”

He added-

“The Swachh Bharat Mission enabled women and developed their skills as masons and created over 75 lakh employment opportunities.”

The PM added that it was only a step towards realizing the dream of developed India. He said that the government aims at implementing various similar projects for ensuring sanitation and clean drinking water.

PM Modi encouraged rainwater harvesting, water recharging, and other projects that would also help in ensuring water supply to bio-toilets. He said that hygiene, environment, and animal protection were major concerns of Mahatma Gandhi, and “plastic is harmful to all three.” He said-

“By 2022, we have to make India free of single-use plastic. The campaign has caught speed in the last three weeks under Swachhta hi Seva campaign. Tonnes of single-use plastic garbage has been collected from across the nation. The use of plastic is coming down significantly, but it can’t be done without public contribution.”
