PM Modi and Nepalese PM Inaugurate Motihari-Amlekhgunj Fuel Pipeline

On Tuesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli together inaugurated the first cross-border oil pipeline of South Asia. This pipeline, which would operate from Motihari in India to Amlekhgunj in Nepal, was inaugurated via video conferencing. In the first phase, it would be used to supply diesel from Motihari. The pipeline was built with an Indian aid of Rs 324 crore.

On occasion, PM of Nepal Oli praised the early implementation of the connectivity project, which has been completed way ahead of schedule. Also, he said that the pipeline was a huge achievement for Nepal. PM Oli said-

“We (India and Nepal) have similar visions of development, prosperity, and happiness of our peoples, backed up by solid political commitment and strong determination to realise them.”

Moreover, PM Modi said that the 69-km pipeline having a capacity of 2 million metric tonnes per year would be providing cleaner petroleum products at an affordable price to the citizens of Nepal. Also, he mentioned the price reduction of petroleum products by Rs. 2 per liter in Nepal.

PM Modi said that he was certain that the bilateral ties between both the nations (India and Nepal) would continuously strengthen across various sectors. Also, he said that regular exchanges at the highest political levels presented a forward-looking agenda to further India-Nepal partnership.

Prime Minister Oli also invited PM Modi to visit Nepal. Further, he said that the ‘Sabka Saath, Saabka Vikas’ and Oli’s vision for ‘Happy Nepal, Prosperous Nepali’ capture the essence of India and Nepal’s commitment, determination, and efforts for transforming the development landscape of both countries.

At present, tankers transport petroleum products from India to Nepal as a part of an arrangement, which has been in place since 1973.

It was in 1996 when the Motihari-Amlekhgunj oil pipeline project was first proposed. However, both governments signed an agreement back in August 2015 to complete the project. Following the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, the project construction got delayed and supply obstruction along the southern border. Finally, the construction works started in April 2018.

PM Modi tweeted-

“Sharing the fruits of progress with friendly nations!

Motihari-Amlekhgunj pipeline will provide cleaner petroleum products at affordable costs to the people of Nepal.

I am glad that India and Nepal cooperation is scaling new heights, for the mutual benefit of our people.”

In another tweet, PM said-

“A special day for India-Nepal friendship!

My friend, PM Oli and I jointly inaugurated South Asia’s first cross-border petroleum products pipeline from Motihari in India to Amlekhgunj in Nepal.

You would be happy that this project has been completed much ahead of schedule.”
