PM Modi Meets & Holds Talks with Sri Lankan Counterpart Rajapaksa

New Delhi: On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed and met the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is on a 5-day visit. PM Modi held bilateral talks and a joint press-meet with his Sri Lankan counterpart in the national capital. He showed hope that the Sri Lankan govt would fulfill expectations of Tamilians for equality, justice, peace, and respect in the island nation.

Earlier, PM Rajapaksa received a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar visited the visiting dignitary and called Sri Lanka a partner in development, progress, and security. Also, he visited President Ram Nath Kovind.

On his official Twitter handle, PM Modi shared pictures with him and wrote that it is Rajapaksa’s first visit to India after assuming the office as PM. He tweeted about having wide-ranging bilateral talks that would help strengthen the friendship between both the nations-

“India is delighted to welcome @PresRajapaksa! It is a matter of joy for us that he has chosen India for his first visit after assuming the PM’s office.

We had wide ranging talks on multiple subjects that will further cement India-Sri Lanka friendship.”

At the press meet, PM Modi remarked that stability, security, and prosperity in Sri Lanka is not only in India’s interest but also in the entire Indian Ocean Region’s interest. He added that both nations have resolved to further cooperation to fight terrorism.

Also, PM Rajapaksa, in his press statement, went on to thank PM Modi for his priority to Neighbourhood First policy.

In the bilateral meeting, both the leaders highlighted the full expanse of Indian-Sri Lanka relations and decided to increase anti-terror cooperation and encourage trade and investment ties further. PM Modi said that India has been a trusted partner in the development of Sri Lanka and would continue to support it in its journey for peace and development.

Moreover, he stated that the new lines of credit declared last year would promote development cooperation between both nations. While talking about the fishermen issue, he said that they mutually decided to embrace a humanitarian approach to deal with it.

After the bilateral talks with PM Rajapaksa, PM Modi tweeted-

“During today’s talks, @PresRajapaksa and I were able to exchange views on bilateral and global issues. Matters relating to fighting terrorism and boosting security cooperation featured prominently in our discussions. We also discussed progress on joint economic projects in SL.”

He further tweeted-

“Both @PresRajapaksa and I agreed that people-to-people relations can be made even stronger between our nations. This includes boosting connectivity. There were also discussions on well being of fishermen as it impacts people from both our countries.”

During his visit, PM Rajapaksa would visit historic religious sites such as Varanasi, Sarnath, Bodh Gaya, and Tirupati.
