PM Modi Inaugurates & Addresses 5th India International Science Festival

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the four-day long 5th India International Science Festival (IISF) organized in Kolkata via video conferencing. He went on to attend this annual festival after his return from Thailand visit, where he participated in ASEAN and related summits.

This 4-day science festival is organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Vijnana Bharti (ViBha), which is a non-profit organization having its roots in the Swadeshi (of one’s own country) Science movement.

While addressing the event, PM Modi said that no nation ever made progress without scientific and technological advancements. He also urged the scientific community to find out measures to boost solar energy and develop electric mobility all over India.

Besides boosting electric mobility, PM Modi said that scientists should work towards developing ways to facilitate the life of common residents by addressing drinking water concerns, reducing health expenses of people, and providing solutions to increase farm productivity.

He added-

“Focus on long-term solutions and long-term benefits. Also, remain conscious about international laws and standards.”

Also, he said that a society having “scientific temper” is always on the path of development. The PM stated-

“India has given the world many great scientists. Our history indeed makes us proud. But now our responsibilities have also grown manifold. The ecosystem for science and technology has to be strengthened and for that the government is providing institutional support for both innovation and invention.”

He also tweeted a clip on his official handle-

“At the India International Science Festival, one of the topics we disused was Scientific Temper.

Here is what I feel on the subject.

Do hear.”

In another tweet, he said-

“Nurturing an eco-system that harnesses science, technology and innovation.”

Further, he said that this festival is being organized in a city that has given great scientists to the country who served humanity for years. He added-

“The science festival itself is such a momentous occasion to value the contribution of those scientists. November 7 is the birth anniversary of Dr C V Raman, and November 30 is that of Dr J C Bose.”

Calling the Chandrayaan-2 mission a successful mission as it generated curiosity among the youth, PM Modi said at the event-

“There are no failures in science.

There are efforts.

There are experiments.

And, finally, there is success!”

The theme of this year’s IISF is RISEN India – Research, Innovation, and Science Empowering the Nation. The event is witnessing active participation from scientists and researchers from all over the country and international delegates from Nepal, Bhutan, and Afghanistan.

On the first day of the annual festival, a Guinness World Record was created for the largest astrophysics assembling of spectroscopes with the participation of more than 1,598 students at Science City, Kolkata. This record was dedicated to NobelPrize winning physicist Dr. C V Raman and the renowned astrophysicist Meghnad Saha.

Every year, this festival is organized to make India’s contribution to the world of science and technology known to people and motivate the young scientists to look for solutions to problems through traditional and modern sciences.
