PM in Chennai, Will Attend Informal Summit with Chinese Prez Xi Jinping

A few hours ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday arrived in Chennai for a two-day Informal Summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coastal town of Mahabalipuram (or Mamallapuram), which is nearly 50 km away from the city. Soon after, PM Modi headed to Mamallapuram by road and has reached a hotel, where he would be staying for two days.

PM Modi came by a special flight from Delhi and Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister K Palaniswami, and other officials of the state govt came to receive him at the airport. He was honored with flowers and Madrasi silk stoles upon his arrival.

After landing in Chennai, PM Modi shared images of his grand welcome and tweeted-

“Landed in Chennai.

I am happy to be in the great land of Tamil Nadu, known for its wonderful culture and hospitality.

It is gladdening that Tamil Nadu will host President Xi Jinping. May this Informal Summit further strengthen ties between India and China.”

The PM also tweeted in Chinese and Tamil. He wished that this Informal India-China Summit would help in strengthening bilateral ties. This is the second informal summit between the two high-profile leaders. Wuhan, the Chinese city, hosted the first informal summit last year.

Later, when Prez Xi arrived at the Indian airport, PM Modi welcomed him to India and tweeted-

“Welcome to India, President Xi Jinping!”

The state and the central government agencies have made efforts to decorate the coastal town of Mahabalipuram, which has had a strong historical connection with China’s Fujian province. Both world leaders will hold a meeting at the 7th-century Shore Temple complex and are likely to speak about several issues, including the new and updated Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) along the border and trade.

According to the sources, PM Modi is expected to discuss the recent developments in J&K only if Prez Xi raises the topic. He may communicate the reasons and nuances behind Delhi’s decision, asserting that Beijing needs to be “sensitive” towards the core concerns of India.

Also, PM Modi and Prez Xi may discuss the terrorism issue. It is vital as the Financial Action Task Force, under China’s presidency, is scheduled to meet during October 13-18 and discuss the issue of Pakistan’s blacklisting. Further, the sources said that India would expect China to regard the case “objectively.”
