As per the National Health Authority (NHA), there were nine hospital admissions every minute all over the nation in the first-year implementation of the flagship scheme of Indian govt. The 50 lakh treatments of both secondary and tertiary levels were worth Rs 7,901 crores and were conducted in 32 states and union territories of India.
The NHA reported in a statement that more than 60% of the total cost was spent on tertiary care. Orthopedics, Radiation Oncology, Cardiology, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, and Urology are the top tertiary specialties. Furthermore, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh are the top-performing states.
Regarding the success of the scheme and achieving the milestone, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, said-
“The Ayushman Bharat family is growing by leaps and bounds. In just over one year, under PM-JAY more than 50 lakh treatments have been availed by beneficiaries across the country. But, this is just the beginning for this path-breaking scheme.”
And, CEO of NHA, Dr. Indu Bhushan, stated-
“50 lakh hospital treatments is a significant milestone for PM-JAY, but there is a long journey ahead. The scheme will continue to focus on reducing catastrophic out-of-pocket health expenditure, improving access to quality health care and meeting the unmet need of the population for hospitalization care, so that we move towards the vision of Universal Health Coverage. Empowering the poorest people in the country with the assurance of Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY is a major area of focus for us.”
Until now, 18,486 hospitals have been impaneled under the scheme throughout the country. In the 1st year, 53% are private hospitals, particularly multi-specialty hospitals. To date, over 50,000 portability cases have been registered, in which migrant and traveling eligible Indians took their treatment outside their respective home state.
The flagship program Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY is the world’s largest fully Government-funded health assurance scheme that was launched on 23 September 2018 by PM Modi. It is a partnership of public and private sector health systems.
The scheme strives to offer quality healthcare to 50-crore poor and lower-middle-income families through a health insurance plan with an annual cover of Rs. 5 lakh per family. Also, it offers cashless and paperless service access to the health beneficiary at the point of service.
